McDowell County is the hidden gem of Pisgah National Forest. Its beauty is rivaled only by its ruggedness. Camp Grier is the perfect place to base your groups' running adventure. Loops of any size can be crafted to dramatic views, waterfalls, or summits. Want to go big? Gain over 6,000 feet in 18 miles and finish on the summit of the highest peak in the East, Mt. Mitchell. Check out more of our trail race and trail running camp offerings at www.tanawhaadvventures.com.
Camp Grier is located at the base of Kitsuma and Heartbreak Ridge. Two of the best downhill trails in NC. We're also within easy striking distance of the wild and remote Woods Mtn. loop and the family friendly trails of Lake James. Our pump track will get you warmed up and a post-ride dip in our lake will cool you down. Need a shuttle? No problem. A free shuttle is included for all lodging guests.
Old Fort Trail Work
March 15-17 and November 23-24
The trails surrounding Old Fort are some of the best in WNC. Each year we like to show them some love. The OF Trail Work Weekend is a biannual event to improve Kitsuma, Heartbreak Ridge, Snooks Nose, and many other trails in the Old Fort area. Volunteers can commit to one day or the whole weekend. We welcome any amount of time volunteers can contribute.
Work starts in the morning and we leave plenty of time in the afternoon for a ride or a run. Shuttles are provided for laps on Kitsuma. Camp Grier provides free camping and lodging as well as dinner on Saturday night.
The 2019 dates are set for March 15-17 and and November 23-24.
Volunteers need to bring:
gloves, closed toed shoes, breakfast, lunch and water bottles, clothing appropriate to be working outside, and camping equipment.
