Our Positions 

 

Summer Staff Supervisor

Description: The Staff Supervisor is in charge of supporting all summer staff. Will assist in planning and facilitating staff training and will make rounds each evening.  Will visit groups throughout the day and provide breaks, support and guidance. Assists in evening/daily activity planning. Manages Counselor in Training program.

Requirements: Participation in summer planning prior to staff training. Must have completed college or 21 or older. Must have previous outdoor experience and experience working with children. Must have a clean driving record as well as a clean background check. Must be energetic, eager to learn and flexible. 

Explorer/Discoverer Counselor

Description:Explorer/Discoverer Counselors live in main camp lodges and serve as role models for campers ages 7-11. Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper.  The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Explorer campers will have time in the art room, time with our farm animals and will hike on camp property. Discoverer campers will do those activities plus have an overnight on camp property at a more primitive location and will venture out on a day trip once a week. All campers will learn new skills including canoeing, climbing, and hiking. 

 

Requirements: Must be 18 or older. Counselors do not need previous outdoor experiences, but must be willing to try out new skills and overcome challenges. Must have a clean driving record and clean background check. Must live on camp property.

Adventure/Navigator Counselor 

Description:Adventure/Navigator Counselors live in more remote cabins as role models for middle or high school aged campers. Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper.  The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.  Adventure and Navigator campers outdoor rock climb, white water canoe, go on overnight camping trips, complete service projects, and participate in all traditional camp activities. These groups spend a lot of time out on the trails surrounding Camp Grier. 

Requirements: Must be 18 or older. We aim to hire staff that have previous experiences hiking, backpacking, climbing, paddling etc. Counselors can be hired as an “explorer/discoverer” counselor and work his or her way up to this position. Must have a clean driving record and clean background check. Must live on camp property.

Waterfront Director

Description: The Waterfront Director carries out the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of activities at the camp’s waterfront that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper’s age and abilities. Provide management to the physical operation of the waterfront’s facilities and equipment. Trains and assists other lifeguards in leading and supervising all waterfront activities (swimming and  canoeing) as well as proper maintenance of the swimming pool (chemicals, hygiene, etc). This individual checks pool chemicals daily.

 

Requirements: Participation in summer planning prior to staff training. Must be 21 or older. Must have an up to date lifeguard certification and 1 year of lifeguard/aquatic experience minimum. Certified Pool Operators will be given preference. Must have a clean background check and driving record.

Lifeguards

Requirements: Lifeguards carry out the mission of the camp by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s waterfront activities. Assist in the management to the physical operation of the waterfront facilities and equipment. 

 

Requirements: Must have certification before camp begins. Preference given for previous experience and 18 years or older. Preference given to guards with paddling whitewater skills. Must have a clean driving record and clean background check. Preferably lives on camp property, but we will accept commuter applications.

Equestrian Director

Description​:​This is a year-round position. The Equestrian Director carries out the mission of the camp through the planning and delivery of a horseback riding program that is safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities.  Provides management to the physical operation of the horseback riding facilities and equipment. Trains and supervises horseback Riding staff. Develops and facilitates year round programming to include lessons, trail rides, and other equestrian related activities.

 

Requirements: Must have completed college or 21 or older. Current certification in horseback riding or equivalent. Current certification in first aid and CPR. Training and experience in horseback riding activities that are offered at camp. Prior supervision of a horseback riding program similar to the camp. Assist in recruiting, scheduling, and supervising equestrian staff. Participate in summer planning prior to staff training. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.

Equestrian Assistant

Description:Equestrian Assistants carry out the mission of the camp through assisting in the development and delivery of a horseback riding program that is safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities.  Assist in the care and maintenance of the horses and related equipment. This position includes typical horse chores such as mucking, grooming and maintaining the trails surrounding camp. You will help instruct beginner and experienced campers on trail rides and around the horse pasture/riding arena. 

 

Requirements: 18 years or older. Must have previous horse experience. Staff must be comfortable teaching others to ride and perform horse chores. Must have a clean background check and driving record.

Farm/Environmental Educator

Description: The Environmental Educator carries out the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of nature or environmental activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities and reflect the camp’s commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. Responsible for planning, preparing, and teaching environmental education activities during the camp day. 

 

Requirements: 18 years or older. The Environmental Educator must have some knowledge and experience with conservation, ecology, bird/insect/plant identification, gardening, and composting.

Mountain Bike Instructor

Description: Mountain Bike Instructors carry out the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of mountain bike skills activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Assist in the management of the mountain biking equipment and supplies. Will assist our Adventure Trip Specialist on all mountain biking trips. Will facilitate training sessions and lead rides on camp property. Will also help with other support staff duties (ex: supporting groups, driving gear to overnight locations, helping with all camp activities). 

Requirements: Must be 18 years or older. Must be an experienced mountain biker. Must be comfortable on the pump track and on trails surrounding camp property. In charge of cleaning/maintaining the bike shack. Must be comfortable teaching and keeping groups safe in the field. Must have a clean background check and driving record. Preferably lives on camp property, but we will accept commuter applications.

Food Service Manager

Description: The Food Service Manager directs the overall food-service operation of the camp including purchasing, preparation, nutrition, service, sanitation, security, personnel management, customer service, and record keeping. Oversee the planning and preparation of nutritionally balanced camp meals, snacks, and pack-out food. Ensure safe and efficient preparation and serving of camp meals through directing the work of other employees.

Requirements: Must have completed college or 21 or older. Experience in institutional or large food service settings. Knowledge of and experience in food service: ordering, inventory, budgeting, food preparation, family-style serving, buffet serving, cleaning, and institutional kitchen equipment. Must hold a serve-safe certification. Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently. Experience in supervision. Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices is essential. Knowledge of and experience in preparation of special dietary foods.
